Reasons to call promptly
Severe toothache, facial swelling, a broken or knocked-out tooth, uncontrolled bleeding, trauma, a lost filling or a painful wisdom tooth should be assessed promptly. The urgency and treatment depend on the cause and your overall health.
What happens at an emergency visit
The immediate priorities are to assess the problem, relieve symptoms where possible and explain the next steps. Examination and X-rays may be needed. Definitive treatment may happen at the same visit or require a follow-up appointment.
Before you arrive
For a knocked-out adult tooth, hold it by the crown, avoid touching the root and seek urgent dental advice. If safe, keep it moist in milk or place it back in position. Do not place a knocked-out baby tooth back into the socket.
