Symptoms that need assessment
Persistent toothache, lingering sensitivity, pain on biting, swelling or a gum pimple can be associated with an inflamed or infected tooth. Similar symptoms can have other causes, so diagnosis is important.
What treatment involves
After the tooth is numbed and isolated, the canals are cleaned, disinfected and sealed. Treatment may take multiple visits. A crown or other restoration may later be recommended to protect the tooth.
Risks and alternatives
Root canal treatment is not always successful and complications can occur. Alternatives may include extraction, monitoring in limited circumstances or referral. Your dentist will explain the relevant options.
